Abstract

Deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures induced by steel reinforcement corrosion leads to costly rehabilitation and even premature failure. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars are considered a viable substitute for conventional steel reinforcement in view of their noncorrosive, light weight, and high tensile-strength properties. Due to the low elastic modulus of the FRP bars, the design of FRP-reinforced concrete beams is usually governed by serviceability, and the FRP bars are still far below the breaking point at the service limit state. Prestressing is a practical technique that could offer benefits in both serviceability performance and utilization of FRP strength. In this thesis, tests on eleven RC beams prestressed with GFRP bars or hybrid reinforcement (GFRP bars and steel strands), including one reference concrete beam were carried out.
