Abstract

Dissertation Title Self-Care Enhancement Program for Orthopedic Patients with External Fixation and its Effect on their Clinical OutcomeDissertation AbstractBackground: Self-care for external fixator patients is critical element in improving knowledge, practice and quality of life for the best possible safe performance and reduced the incidence of complications. Aim: assess the impact of self-care enhancement program for orthopedic patients with external fixation on their clinical outcome. Design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized. Setting: The research was carried out in the orthopedic departments and orthopedic outpatient clinics located at Main Mansoura University Hospital and Emergency Hospital. Subject: A purposive selection of 66 patients who had an external fixator. Tools: This study used four tools: (I) the patients’ interview questionnaire. (II) The patient’s self-reported practices checklist. (III): the Checketts-Otterburns grading system. (IV) Patients’ satisfaction scale. Results: In terms of patients’ reported practices, 100% of the control group had an unsatisfactory level of practice, compared to 87.9% of the study group having a satisfactory level of practice. Moreover, 18.2% of the control group and, conversely, 60.6% of the study group showed no signs of infection (p<0.001). Conclusion: The self-care enhancement program demonstrates a favorable influence on patients’ self-care behaviors and diminishes the occurrence of pin-site infection. Recommendations: Engage the SC enhancement program as guidance when providing routine nursing care for patients with external fixator.
