Abstract Benign superficial lesions of the vocal fold (nodule, polyp, Reinke’s oedema and granulomas) arise from epithelium and the lamina propria. Vocal misuse and abuse lead to excessive mechanical stress and trauma in the membranous portion of the vocal fold, resulting in wound formation. Wound healing leads to remodeling of the superficial layer of the lamina propia and the vocal fold epithelium. This tissue remodeling leads to the formation of a benign vocal fold lesion. |
