Abstract

Dyslexia is a prevalent and persistent learning challenge impacting students globally. It poses significant social and psychological consequences, often affecting young learners and hindering their potential by potentially limiting their academic and career success. Early identification and intervention are decisive, as the challenges of dyslexia can spill over into numerous aspects of life, impacting self-esteem, academic achievement, and future opportunities.
Thus, addressing dyslexia is not just an individual concern but a societal imperative, requiring comprehensive support systems and inclusive learning environments. Hence, the present study aimed at assessing the awareness of primary school personnel regarding dyslexia among primary students in Alexandria.
The study was conducted using a descriptive research design. By using a multistage sampling technique, 25% of the primary governmental schools affiliated to the eight educational zones in Alexandria were randomly selected (120 schools). from each school, 10 school personnel were selected randomly (a school health nurse, a social worker/psychologist, an administrator, and 7 teachers) giving a total number of 120 nurses, 120 social workers, 120 administrators, and 840 teachers with a total sample of 1200 school personnel.
Tools for data collection
School personnel awareness regarding dyslexia structured questionnaire sheet was developed and used to collect the study’s data. Before data collection, the study tool was tested for validity and reliability. The tool was subjected to a jury consisting of five experts in the field of community health nursing. Recommended modifications were made accordingly. Approvals were obtained for conducting the study in the specified settings.
A pilot study was carried out on 120 school personnel (12 administrators, 12 school health nurses, 84 teachers, and 12 psychologists or social workers), not from the same schools where the study had been carried out and was not included in the original study sample. Then, data was collected by the researcher during the period from September 2022 to June 2023. After that, the collected data was coded, and fed to a computer for processing and analysis using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 25.0).
The main findings revealed from the study:
