Abstract Diabetes mellitus and its complications are becoming more common, in 2021, 537 million adults are living with diabetes and about 73 million adults have diabetes in the MENA Region. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is one of the most common complications of diabetes, more than 90% of the patients with DPN have DSPN. Cardiac autonomic neuropathy is one the most underdiagnosed complications of diabetes, patients with diabetes and CAN have a fivefold higher risk of mortality. The study aims to assess the association between cardiac autonomic neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy in patients with T2DM and to assess the effect of alpha lipoic acid on CAN. The study included 90 patients with type 2 diabetes having DPN confirmed with nerve conduction study, they were then randomized into 2 groups each of 45 patients; group (A) received alpha lipoic acid while group (B) received a placebo. |
