Abstract
This study was a prospective randomized comparative clinical trial that was conducted in Otorhinolaryngology department at Assiut University Hospital from October 2021 to October 2023, the study evaluated the efficacy of doxycycline as an alternative to rifampicin in the treatment of rhinoscleroma, the study involved 63 patients diagnosed clinically and histopathologically with rhinoscleroma and randomly divided into three groups, the first group was treated with doxycycline for 8 weeks, the second group was treated with a combination of doxycycline and ciprofloxacin for 8 weeks and the third group was treated with Rifampicin for 6 months ( the third group was excluded from comparison due to the unavailability of rifampicin with only 8 cases who completed their treatment ).
Results have shown that doxycycline has a relatively low efficacy both clinically and histopathologically when used alone but this efficacy is significantly increased on combining the drug with ciprofloxacin as this combination shows high remission rate and markedly improve the patient symptoms, also surgery is an important treatment modality that may be needed in addition to the medical treatment to correct gross pathology that can`t be corrected by antibiotic therapy alone.
