Abstract Dysphagia is a common complication after stroke, Dysphagia affects more than 50% of stroke survivors and can persist for 6 months. Dysphagia is usually associated with aspiration pneumonia, prolonged hospitalization, and increased mortality. Dysphagia associated with increase of 17% in the incidence of pulmonary infection compared to those that were not dysphagic (33% vs. 16% respectively). Dysphagia is also associated with malnutrition and dehydration; thus, early identification of stroke survivors with dysphagia help to reduce morbidity and mortality. Bedside exercise program showed an improvement of swallowing function and exhibited a positive secondary effect, such as mood state and quality of life, on subacute stroke patients with dysphagia. For improvement of rehabilitation results on subacute stroke patients with dysphagia. Multiple texture-modified diets arrangements in different facilities were associated with improvement in swallowing ability and nutritional status. Our study was carried out in Menoufia university hospital on 68 patients (32 dysphagic and 36 non dysphagic) from September 2022 to March 2023(24weeks). And it was approved by the ethical committee of faculty of medicine Menoufia university that was held in September 2022 coded by (9/2022NEURO33). All patients in this study subjected to the following: 1. Detailed history and examination (general and neurological): 2. Clinical assessment using NIHSS,MRS, ASSIST and Pneumonia scales: 3. FEES. 4. Swallowing exercises 5. Diet modification. The study showed that: High NIHSS on admission, hypertension, white matter lesions, and brain atrophy were more prevalent in post-stroke dysphagia and may be considered risk factors. Patients who suffer a stroke need to be screened for swallowing disorders and received treatment as soon as they are in the intensive care unit. The sooner the intervention, the better the prognosis of patients recovering from dysphagia. Combination between swallowing exercises and modified diet improves post stroke dysphagia. Patients would recover during the first 2 months after a stroke. |
