Abstract

As part of Egypt’s present strategy to develop a national railway network, the Egyptian government has initiated a plan to utilize high-speed trains. One of the basic issues in designing high-speed railway bridges nowadays is the dynamic response induced by passing trains. Trains traveling at high velocities may cause resonance phenomena in bridges when the frequency of the vibrations is close to the natural frequency of the structure, which can cause passenger discomfort, ballast instability, or train derailment. In this study, the dynamic response of two different structural systems of reinforced concrete bridges will be investigated. The first is a box-girder bridge. The other option is the prestressed I-beam bridge, which has lower stiffness and dynamic properties but is more economic and simpler to construct. The purpose of this research is to reduce the resonant dynamic structural response of the second bridge by using fluid viscous dampers to increase the bridge’s damping coefficient and comparing its behavior to that of the box girder bridge. Bridges have been investigated under the effect of Eurocode dynamic train loads and the real train load and at increasing speeds using three-dimensional finite element models. The proposed approach showed a considerable ability to control the vibration of high-speed railway bridges.
