Abstract

Although fatigue is one of the most prevalent phenomena encountered by older people, it is still seen as a neglected complaint. This may be connected to the idea that feeling tired as an individual ages is a normal component of ageing. The phenomenon of fatigue has multiple dimensions, including behavioral, social, psychological, and physical components, as it is a condition that is typically accompanied by a weakening or depletion of one’s physical and mental capabilities. It can range from general lethargy to a burning sensation in one’s muscles because of hard activity. Fatigue has a severe impact on geriatric patients’ lives because it interferes with daily routine tasks, interrupts desired behaviors, and prevents them from executing activities of daily living or even starting them. Health care experts may be closer to finding a solution to the issue of fatigue among geriatric patients as they investigate the contributing variables, which could also have a positive impact on society.
The aim of this study was to identify the factors associated with fatigue among geriatric patients. The study was conducted at outpatient clinics at the Main University Hospital, Alexandria University. A convenient subject of 220 geriatric patients who fulfill the following criteria, age 60 years and above and able to communicate were enrolled in the study.
Data was collected using four tools:
Tool I: Socio demographic and Clinical Data Structured Interview Schedule:

Tool II: The FACIT fatigue scale (version 4): -
This tool was used to assess geriatric patient’s level of fatigue over the course of previous week during their typical daily activities with total score of 52 points.
Tool III: Geriatric Depression Scale –Short Form (GDS-SF):
This scale was used to assess the presence of depression in geriatric patients, it included 15 statements.
Tool lV: Mini-Cognitive scale (Mini-Cog): -
This tool was used to identify the presence of cognitive impairment through assessing a variety of cognitive domains, including cognitive function, memory, language comprehension, visual-motor skills, and executive function.
Method
-
Approvals to conduct the study from the responsible authorities were done. - Tool I was developed, and tools II and IV were translated into Arabic. Tools II and IV were tested for their content validity. Reliability of tool II and tool IV were ascertained.
-
A pilot study was carried out on 20 geriatric patients, and they were excluded from the study subjects.
-
Each geriatric patient was interviewed individually at the study setting to collect the necessary data.
