Abstract This study aims to investigate the effect of nanoparticles on the oil recovery. Experimental work was made to investigate the effect of silica, iron oxide, and zinc oxide nanoparticles on the oil recovery factor. Field application was made in two Egyptian fields to investigate the effect of silica nanoparticles on the rate of oil production. The investigation proved that the nanoparticles could improve the recovery factor of the crude oil from the reservoir. In the experimental work, the recovery factor at the breakthrough showed about 70% for nanoflooding but about 50% for water flooding. The nanoparticles used have a size range of 30-60 nm. The concentration was 0.5 wt. % for all three types used in the experiment. The experiment was conducted under ambient conditions. In the field application, the nanoflooding pattern showed a high flow rate (650 bbls/day for sandstone formation and 310 bbls/day for limestone formation). On the other hand, the water injection patterns showed a low flow rate (310 bbls/day for sandstone formation and 225 bbls/day for limestone formation). |
