Abstract

Evaluation of a manufactured machine for grading onion was carried out taking into consideration: 1. Machine productivity, 2. grading efficiency, 3. Mechanical damage percentage, 4. Energy consumed, 5. The mechanical operation cost, 6. The mechanical damage cost and 7. The mechanical criterion cost.
The main results obtained are summarized under the following points.
Some operating parameters affecting on machine productivity: The highest value of machine productivity was 1.716 Mg/h at feeding rates of 1.8 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 20 rpm and constant inclination angle 10º. The lowest value of machine productivity was 0.639 Mg/h at feeding rates of 0.9 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 10 rpm and constant inclination angle 0º.
Some operating parameters affecting on machine grading efficiency: The highest value of grading efficiency was 97.0 % at feeding rates of 1.5 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 20 rpm and constant inclination angle 10º. The lowest value of grading efficiency was 71.0 % at feeding rates of 0.9 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 10 rpm and constant inclination angle 0º.
Some operating parameters affecting on mechanical damage percentage:
The highest value of mechanical damage percentage was 28.2 % at feeding rate of 1.8 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 30 rpm and constant inclination angle 10º. The lowest value of mechanical damage percentage was 5.4 % at feeding rate of 0.9 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 10 rpm and constant inclination angle 0º.
Some operating parameters affecting on energy consumed: The highest value of energy consumed was 1.047 kW.h/Mg at feeding rate of 0.9 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 30 rpm and constant inclination angle 0º. The lowest value of energy consumed was 0.28 kW.h/Mg at feeding rate of 1.8 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 10 rpm and constant inclination angle 10º.
Some operating parameters affecting on operation cost: The highest value of operation cost was 26.95 L.E/Mg at feeding rate of 0.9 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 10 rpm and constant inclination angle 0º. The lowest value of operation cost was 10.03 L.E/Mg at feeding rate of 1.8 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 20 rpm and constant inclination angle 10º.
Some operating parameters affecting on damage cost: The highest value of damage cost was 1410 L.E/Mg at feeding rate of 1.8 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 30 rpm and constant inclination angle 10º. The lowest value of damage cost was 227 L.E/Mg at feeding rate of 0.9 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 10 rpm and constant inclination angle 0º.
Some operating parameters affecting on criterion cost: The highest value of criterion cost was 1420.4 L.E/Mg at feeding rate of 1.8 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 30 rpm and constant inclination angle 10º. The lowest value of criterion cost was 297.0 L.E/Mg at feeding rate of 0.9 Mg/h, cylinder rotating speed of 10 rpm and constant inclination angle 0º.
