Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is a common health problem affect functional health status. Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune inflammatory disease-causing synovitis in multiple joints especially hands and legs, joint destruction and disability gradually. Aim of the study: Assess the functional health status among patient with rheumatoid arthritis. Design, A descriptive design was used in this study. Setting: This study was conducted at rheumatoid clinic in Suez Canal university hospitals. The sample size was 67 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Tools of data collection: Two tools were used. Tool 1: A structured interview questionnaire: It consisted of two parts: Part (1): Demographic characteristics and patient profile, and Part (2): Concerned with patient’s knowledge about disease. Tool II: Multidimensional Health Assessment Questionnaire to assess functional health status. Result: Regarding functional health status, the physical function had some difficulty in 42.7% and psychological function had some difficulty in 70.5%, 98.5% had morning stiffness, 58.2% had moderate fatigue, 52.2% had moderate pain, 56.7% had moderate global health status, 56.7% had unsatisfactory level of knowledge about disease and its treatment. Regarding factors affecting functional health status, obesity was the predominant factor in 49.3%. Statistically positive correlation between functional status and educational level, statistically positive correlation between health beliefs and time of stiffness and statistically negative correlation between psychological status and age were found.
Conclusion: The result of the present study concluded that, regarding functional health status there is some difficulty in physical function, psychological function, and moderate global health status, in addition to patient had morning stiffness, pain and fatigue. Regarding factor of functional health status, there is Statistically positive correlation between functional status and educational level, statistically positive correlation between health beliefs and time of stiffness and statistically negative correlation between psychological status and age were found.
Recommendation: Educational guidelines for patients with rheumatoid arthritis to improve their functional health status was recommended.
