Abstract

Odontectomy of mandibular third molar is usually associated with post- operative pain, swelling with restricted mouth opening due to muscle spasm. Use of ozone gel in order to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic ozone application in the management of pain, swelling, and trismus was studied in forty patients (with mean of age 30.5 years ranged from 22 to 39 years). from the outpatient clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Suez Canal University They were divided randomly into two equal groups. group (I): formed of twenty patients, who were subjected to surgical removal of impacted mandibular 3rd.molar .While group (II) represented twenty patients subjected to odontectomy of impacted mandibular 3rd.molar followed by the application of ozone gel into the socket.
Results showed that ozone gel application therapy was useful for the reduction of postoperative pain and increased quality of life after odontectomy of mandibular third molar. However, it had no effect on neither postoperative swelling nor trismus in addition to bone density.
