Abstract

Shipping is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) and air pollutant emissions. These emissions mainly come from using diesel fuel for power generation. Globally the best solution to reduce emissions by using alternative fuels. In this experiment we try to reduce emissions of the ships by using marine gas oil and selective catalytic reduction technology to reduce the cost and difficulty of using LNG as alternative fuel. As a case study, to reduce the emissions of Aida IV ship which was powered by marine diesel fuel oil (MDO) we made a comparison between liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the marine diesel oil with selective catalytic reduction (MDO+SCR) through measuring the exhaust emissions of the main engine by (Sensonic2000) gadget the measurement taken at the main sailing load of 85%. The experiment measured also the concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM10), sulphur oxides (SOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon dioxide (CO2) because they have the largest environmental impact. Utilizing the reduction technologies, the same ship engine was utilized with the same load. Finally, the study found that MDO+SCR is the better technology for the Aida IV ship as a supply and training ship due to its low consumption and lack of engine modification requirements; the only thing needed is to add the SCR system to the exhaust line, which is the most straightforward and most affordable solution. In terms of emission, there aren’t many differences between them either.
