Abstract

This study concerned with upgrade the capacity of the Al-Maseen existing wastewater treatment plant from 3000 m3/day to 6000 m3/day. In this study we compared between the MBBR system and the BAS system as the upgrade system used for this plant. The two systems chosen according to the previous studies which recommended the application of these two systems in upgrading any existing plants and increase their capacity. According to the existing units in the plant, calculations for the two systems would be done. The study concerned with all the modifications and the new units and equipment’s required to apply the two system in the existing plant. Generally, the results of this study had shown the following conclusions: 1- Both of the systems required the same preliminary treatment unit. 2- The modification of the oxidation ditch to BAS tanks easier than the modification of it to MBBR tank. 3- The MBBR system required almost double the media volume required to the BAS system to treat the same discharge with the same conditions of the influent and effluent wastewater characteristics. 4- In the BAS system, MBBR tank before the activated sludge tank protect the activated sludge tank from the shock loads. 5- The MBBR required higher oxygen demand than that required for the BAS system. 6- For both systems, it’s required to add final sedimentation tanks with the same diameter. 7- BAS system required lower area to install than MBBR system. 8- The BAS system required return pumps to complete the biological action in the tanks. 9- The amount of the sludge produced from the MBBR system higher than the sludge from the BAS system. 10- For both systems, it’s required to add two thickener tanks but with different diameters. 11- The thickener required for the MBBR system has the higher diameter. 12- According to the large amount of sludge from MBBR system in this plant, it’s required to add belt press unit. 13- The supernatant amount produced from the MBBR system more than the produced from the BAS system. 14- As the mechanical requirements for the MBBR system higher than that required to the BAS system, so the electrical power required to operate the plant when applying the MBBR system will be higher also.
