Abstract Inguinal hernia is a common finding in infants and children and represents the condition that is requiring laparoscopic or surgical repair in the pediatric age group. The incidence of inguinal hernia ranges from 1 to 4.4% and is higher in infants, proportionate with the higher rate of patent processusvaginalis. Inguinal hernia repair may be followed by complications such as recurrence, testicular atrophy, post-operative testicular hematoma, wound infection…etc. This study was conducted on 40male cases with inguinal hernia, hernia repair was done. Duplex ultrasonography was used for evaluation of testicular vascularity through measurement of the following parameters (pre-operatively and post-operatively):-peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), resistive index (RI) and testicular volume. The present study showed significant increase of PSV and RI 1month and 2 month post-operatively when compared with the preoperative values. The study showed no significant increase of EDV values post-operatively when compared with the pre-operative values. The increase of PSV and RI in the post-operative periods indicates increased vascular resistance of testicular vasculature. This is due to vasoconstriction most probably due to post-operative testicular edema but these values returns to be near to pre-operative values after 6 months post-operatively when the edema subsides. There was no significant change of testicular volume when compared pre- and post-operative readings. Discussion of these results was done and comparison was conducted between the results of this study and other similar studies. |
