The current research aimed to reveal the differences between Depression-vulnerable and normal university students in self-efficacy and well-being. With an analysis of the role of one the demographic variables, which is gender. In addition to adopting a structural equation model that includes two standard models (two factor analysis) and a structural model (path analysis). In this research, we have dealt with the concept of self-efficacy, its relationship to some other concepts, its growth factor, sources, characteristics, and the theories that explain it. Then we dealt the concept of well-being, its relationship to some other concepts of well-being, its components, and the theories and models that explain it. Then, we discussed the concept of vulnerable depression, defining depressive disorders, presenting the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder according to the fifth diagnostic and statistical of mental disorders, theories explaining vulnerable, and symptoms of depression.
Then we moved on to the presentation of previous research and studies, and they were divided into two axes: the first is research and studies concerned with examining the relationship between self-efficacy, well-being, and some demographic variables, and the second is research and studies concerned with depression, vulnerable depression, self-efficacy, and indirect studies. Then we presented the research hypotheses.
After that, we clarified the method used in the research, which is the comparative descriptive method, and the described the sample, which consisted of (200) male and female students. The number of those vulnerable depression was (53), and the number of normal students was (52), and their age ranged between (20: 23). The basic data form, form to determine the socioeconomic, vulnerable depression test, self-efficacy test, and psychological well-being test were applied, and then we mentioned the application procedures and the statistical methods used.
Then we reviewed the results of the research ,which revealed that there were statistically significant differences between vulnerable depression and normal students on all research variables, in the direction of normal students. It was also found that there are significant differences between male and female in three components of vulnerable depression (emotional, social, and physical), the total degree of vulnerable, and the component of positive relationships with others for psychological well-being, in the direction of the female group.
There are also differences between normal and vulnerable male in the total degree of self-efficacy, the total degree of psychological well-being, and three components of psychological well-being (environmental mastry, positive relationships with others, and self-acceptance), in the direction of normal males. It was also found that there are differences between normal and vulnerable females in the total degree of self-efficacy, the total degree of psychological well-being, and the six components of psychological well-being in the direction of normal females. The results also revealed that there are differences between the vulnerable male and the vulnerable female in the independence component of the psychological well-being, in the direction of the vulnerable males. On the other hand, the results found that there are differences between normal males and normal females in the component of positive relationships with others for psychological well-being, in the direction of normal females.
The results also showed that the proposed model in consistent with the data, and that there is a general factor for psychological well-being that includes six components (independence, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relationships with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance). And that there is also a general factor for vulnerable depression that includes five components (emotional, cognitive, social, physical, and behavioral). The results also indicated that there is a correlation between the general factor for psychological well-being and self-efficacy. And that there is a significant negative effect of the general factor for psychological well-being on the general factor for vulnerable depression, and in contrast there was no effect of self-efficacy on the general factor of vulnerable.
Then, these results were discussed in the light of their support for the research hypotheses, and the extent of consistency and difference between them and the results of previous research and studies, and also in the light of some theoretical frameworks, with reference to some recommendations and future research.
