Abstract

Osteoporosis is a generalized skeletal disease that is considered the fourth most common disease of the elder population, especially women. Osteoporosis is reported to be one of the most common obstacles that may face a successful dental implant treatment due to the low bone quality and density, which affect implant osteointegration adversely.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) on alveolar bone density around the implant and its impact on the implant osseointegration compared to the standard implant technique in osteoporotic patients.
A randomized controlled clinical study with a 5-month follow-up time frame , was conducted on 20 female patients aged from 48 to 60 years were diagnosed with osteoporosis, who have missed tooth/teeth that need to be restored at the premolar\molar area of the mandible. Patients were divided equally into 2 groups. (Study group): 10 patients received a dental implant and then were exposed to PEMF. (Control group): 10 patients treated with only standard implant placement without PEMF exposure. Alveolar bone density was measured by cone beam CT and implant stability was calculated by osstell.
Clinical evaluation
All cases were followed up after the implantation surgery periodically for a period of five months, in accordance with the clinical criteria of implant success for all cases.
Healing process after implant surgery was normal for all cases of the implantation areas without any symptoms of implant failure (infection – clinical mobility).
Radiographic evaluation
An overall increase in the alveolar bone density around the implants was demonstrated in all cases and more significant in the study group cases than control group cases.
Resonance Frequency Analysis Evaluation (ostell)
In general, the stability of implants in all cases was increased and more significant in the study group cases than in control group cases.
