Abstract

Patients and methods : The study included 196 residents working in Cairo University Hospitals. They were assessed by a four part assessment questionnaire: 1) Semi-structured Sociodemographic data sheet. 2) Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) Arabic version. 3) Depression, Anxiety and Stress (DASS) Scale Arabic version. 4) Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS) Arabic version. Residents who were recorded to have high burnout were further subjected to selected sections of Present State Exmaination-10 short Arabic version (PSE) testing: Physical Health, Somatoform, Dissociative Disorder, Worry / Tension. Anxiety/Phobias, Obsessions, Thinking/Concentration/Energy/Interest, Depression and Bodily Functions Results :{u202C} 63 residents were found to have high burnout. 33 of them accepted taking the PSE. Statistically significant results were revealed for depression, anxiety, stress, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment when correlated to the marital status. and for depression, anxiety and stress subscales when correlated to duration spent in residency, specialty and total working hours per day. Conclusions: The study demonstrated the high prevalence of burnout syndrome among Cairo University residents to an alarming extent. This study highlights the need for providing medical residents with special care, attention and support. Special support groups for more prone medical residents are recommended
