Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of New large aircraft (NLA) on airport flexible pavement, to clarify the impact of NLA on flexible pavement life and on declared pavement classification number (PCN). This study was conducted using hurghada airport air fleet composition to form four annual departure levels; and four standard subgrade strength categories, and introducing NLA at five different percentages to reach the research objectives. Sensitivity analysis for pavement life and PCN values were also conducted. Furthermore, a case study was conducted to compare the expected impact of NLA on a sample of Egyptian airports. It is concluded from this research that, where an airport has a subgrade with CBR value higher than 6%, airport authority should permit the operation of A380 up to an additional 3% of the existing annual departures without losing more than 10 to 30 percent of pavement life
