Abstract This study was carried out to identify the critical length of step-tapered piles after which no further increase in lateral resistance is achieved for both rigid and flexible piles. The lateral capacity of flexible step-tapered piles is higher than the lateral capacity of uniform piles of equivalent volume. A relationship was developed to obtain the optimum configuration for flexible step-tapered piles using the flexibility factor (Kr). However, the critical length of rigid step-tapered piles was not achieved where increasing the step-tapered length results in increase of lateral capacity to full length |
