Abstract

The peri-pubertal changes of Androgen receptors (AR) on Sertoli, Leydig and germ cells were monitored in the Albino rat (Sprague Dawley). Forty Five rats were used and sub grouped into 3 groups 15 rats each (pre-pubertal, pubertal and post-pubertal). The collected data manifest that AR play a critical role in male fertility since rat lacking AR showed incomplete germ cell proliferation and lowered testosterone level resulting in azoospermia and infertility. Germ cells Androgen receptors are not essential for spermatogenesis and normal fertility of rat. Androgens and AR signaling in Sertoli cells play the most important role in spermatogenesis. Androgen and AR signaling in Leydig cells display autocrine regulation. Lack of functioning AR of Leydig cells exert a major influence on Leydig cell steroidogenic function leading to arrest of spermatogenesis predominately during the spermatid stage
