Abstract Tuberculosis (TB) is the most deadly infectious disease in the world and it is one of the most important health problems in developing countries. However, most of these cases will not develop the full-blown disease; asymptomatic, latent infection is most common. In most people, especially in contacts of patients with TB infection, the bacterium establishes a latent infection, and the lifetime risk of developing disease is 5-10 years. The detection and treatment of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection is a key strategy in the control of TB. Improve methods for detecting both latent TB infection and TB disease are needed. Our study was conducted on selected 88 household contacts to patients infected with active tuberculosis admitted to Abbassia Chest Disease Hospital and El Gisa Chest Disease Hospital, between 2010-2012. Aiming to evaluate the performance characteristics of QuantiFERON-TB Gold in-tube test compared with Tuberculin Skin test for detecting latent tuberculosis infection in household contact to patients infected with active tuberculosis |
