Abstract

Large quantity of cement kiln dust (CKD) is produced during cement production. It is one of the major environmental problems facing the world. The beneficial uses of CKD include serving as filler material in highway construction and maintenance and as a component of cement mortar/concrete.
This work presents the reusing of the removed kiln cement dust in manufacturing of cement concrete bricks. All the properties of the bricks that were tested found to be satisfactory according to the Egyptian Code. CKD represents a useful and cost-effective alternative to other chemical additives like lime, fly ash and Portland cement . CKD may be added to asphalt binder to produce low ductile mastic asphalt which is the mixture of asphalt binder and fine material. This helps in reducing the asphalt cement requirements by 15-25%. Moreover, the CKD provides stripping resistance for the pavement. Also CKD used as a blending agent in concrete manufacture, where it has the same properties as cement. Therefore, it could replace the Portland cement in concrete production. CKD blended with fly ash or slag resulted in better or similar characteristics in comparison to ordinary concrete.
Cost and economic impacts of CKD disposal practices in the technical specifications of road projects as an alternative to lime powder were carried out. The validity of using cement-side earth material as additives has been proven to improve the engineering properties of the substrate materialsLarge quantity of cement kiln dust (CKD) is produced during cement production.
