Abstract Our thesis aims at analyzing and describing the translation of the colloquial idioms which exist in the novel of Khaled Al-Khamisi Noah’s Ark in Arabic and its translation in Spanish. We intend with our study to examine and describe the different techniques and procedures of translation used in transferring these colloquial idiomatic expressions of the Arabic novel. Accordingly, we try to find out the degree of equivalence of translation and the preservation of literary style and communicative value in the Target Text. The translation of idiomatic expressions or colloquial idioms is problematic for two reasons: first, the idioms, which come from the phraseology, require certain grades of equivalence when they are translated to the Target Language; second, the colloquialism and the linguistic variation require a special translation treatment while transferring them to the target language either by choosing colloquial or standard. It is mandatory in the translation process to conserve the literary style and the cultural baggage. Consequently, the double problematic related to the translation process of the original language to the target language emerges. We have to consider that Arabic and Spanish have different linguistic characteristics. Hence, we will analyze the translation of the colloquial idioms from Arabic into Spanish, while verifying the applied criteria, the maintenance of the linguistic equivalence and the cultural marc. Key words: idiomatic expressions, Noah’s Ark, Arabic-Spanish translation, literary translation, translation techniques. |
