Abstract Imbalance of the spine can cause significant disability,as it may lead to significant back pain, limitation inmobility and a poor quality of life.Kyphosis is a deformity with fixed spinal vertebrae that does not allow traction and suspension of the spine. The lack of a mobile spine frequently results in early truncal decompensation and a large compensatory curve, which may progress with time. Rigid kyphosis in adults usually occurs with functional impairment and neurologic complications(71).Severe kyphosis in adults remains as a big challenge for spine surgeons. Severe kyphosis results from many conditions, including the congenital kyphosis , kyphoscoliosis , post laminectomy kyphosis , trauma , granulomatous disease , bonydysplasias , rotational kyphosis or kyphosing scoliosis , and spinal tuberculosis. Neglected or untreated kyphosis curve can be severe and rigid and occasionally can result in compression of lung and abdominal structures(71).Kyphosis can be diagnosed by family history and presentation neurological examination , radiological and respiratory examination , accurate assessment and measurement of trunk deformity such as kyphosis are required in planningtreatment and to asses its results(71). Kyphosis can be treated either conservative or surgical according to the degree of deformity. The conservative treatment like physical therapy, electrical stimulation, traction, casting and brace treatment. When non surgical methods fail we shift to surgical interference( ). |
