Abstract

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has a substantial risk of morbidity and mortality. Liver transplantation has faced unique challenges due to COVID-19 all over the world.
Objective: To investigate: the effect of preoperative SARS-CoV 2 infection in potential candidates and living donors on the outcome of living donor liver transplantation.
Patients and Methods: The study was carried out at Ain Shams Center for Organ Transplantation (ASCOT). A total of 74 LDLT recepients & their donors were included, 21 were females and 53 were males who underwent LDLT operation during the interval between January 2020 and august 2022.
Results: Further assessment of factors affecting overall survival using cox regression analysis, it showed that overall survival is decreased and affected mainly by renal impairment and number of PRBCS transfused and COVID 19 didn’t affect survival among recepients. We reached to a conclusion based on our studied population that SARS-CoV-2 didn’t affect survival among the recepients of liver transplantation.
Conclusion: There was no statistical significance in between preoperative infected SARS COV 2 and non infected recipients/donors regarding follow up labs and all the labs were almost normalized in 6 months post operative. SARS COV 2 infection preoperative didn’t affect survival among recipients/donors in 1 year and 2 years. Factors affected overall survival and mortality among recipients according to our study were preexisting renal impairment and massive transfusion after using cox regression analysis.
