Abstract

A pharmacognostical study of Solidago canadensis L. (Canadian goldenrod) family Asteraceae was carried out. Literature survey on several Solidago species was reviewed. A botanical study was conducted to help in the identification of the plant. A preliminary phytochemical screening and quantitative determination (spectrophotometrically) of the main active constituents (phenolics, flavonoids and saponins) were performed. Biological study including acute toxicological studies and diuretic activity (against three reference diuretic drugs) were conducted on different extracts of the flowering aerial parts of the plant as well as its essential oil. The 70% ethanolic extract of the aerial parts exhibited the highest diuretic activity of all tested samples with its ethyl acetate fraction being the most active among the other fractions. The essential oil exhibited moderate diuretic activity. All the tested samples were aquaretics . Positive correlation appears to exist between the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and the investigated diuretic activity. Ethanol (70%) was the solvent of choice for extraction of phenolics and flavonoids which were present in highest concentration in the ethyl acetate fraction of the 70% ethanolic extract of the flowers, therefore it was subjected to phytochemical investigation that resulted in isolation and identification of 8 flavonoids, 2 phenolic acids and 1 nucleoside.
