Abstract

Objective: Patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) often experience postural instability as well as brief episodes of vertigo. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of canalith repositioning procedures (CRP) on the improvement in postural instability in patients with BPPV and to find factors that would predict this improvement. Results: There were a statistically significant difference between pre and post-repositioning SOT 4, 5, 6 and CS, Compared to age matched normative values there were a statistically significant difference at SOT 4, 5, 6 and CS pre-repositioning and only statistically significant difference at SOT6 post-repositioning however, individually some patients had some abnormal SOT scores. Younger and right side BPPV patients were more likely to improve their postural instability. Conclusion: Treatment of BPPV with CRP results in improved postural instability, but still some patients have residual instability after treatment and vestibular rehabilitation is recommended for them
