Abstract
Objective: To detect whether laparoscopic complications are related to patient{u2019}s risk factors or surgeon{u2019}s experience. Results: The patients were classified into 2 groups (with and without surgical complications). 23 complications were recorded. 7 cases had failed procedure and were converted to laparotomy (conversion rate is 4.6%), while 16 cases (10.6 %) had surgical injuries. Univariate analysis for the two groups revealed high surgical complication rate with higher BMI, higher age, previous laparotomy, presence of peritoneal adhesions, operative procedures, number of trocars used during the procedure and presence of endometriosis. Surprisingly, the rate of complications was higher with increased surgeon’s experience. Conclusion: Laparoscopic surgical complications were highly affected by certain patient’s risk factors while the surgeon’s experience was not a protective factor against complications especially abdominal access injuries. History of previous laparotomy is a major risk factor which increases risk of conversion to open surgery. Experience can affect the rate of complications during tissue dissection.
