Abstract

This study was carried out in pots at the Experimental Nursery of the Ornamental Horticulture Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt during the two successive seasons of 2011 and 2012 to investigate the substitution potential of ammonium sulphate nitrogenous mineral fertilizer by sheep manure and active dry yeast biofertilizer, separately or in combinations. Plants received ammonium sulphate (20.5%N) at the rate of 300or 150 kg/feddan, representing full or half rate (N or 1/2N). Sheep manure (SM) was added at 30 or 15 m3/ fed representing half or full rate. Active dry yeast (Y, Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) was used at 6g /L. Control, as all the treatments received calcium super phosphate (15.5% P2O5) at the rate of 300 kg/feddan and potassium sulphate (48% K2O) at the rate of 100 kg/ feddan. Treatments of SM, SM+Y, 1/2 SM +Y gave higher values than using N alone, as did1/2N+SM, 1/2N+1/2 SM, 1/2N+ Y treatments. It is recommended to fertilize lavender plants grown in sandy soils with sheep manure at the rate of 30 m3/ feddan +6g/L active dry yeast followed by {u00BD} SM+Y treatments to promote the vegetative growth characteristics (plant height , number of branches, fresh leaF: stem fresh weight ratio, fresh and dry weights of herb, root fresh and dry weights), essential oil production (essential oil percentage, yield and components) and chemical composition (total chlorophylls, carotenoids, total carbohydrates and N, P ,K nutrients)
