Abstract The Thesis includes two main parts. In the first part, parametric studies on the V / H ratio, as obtained from the seismic records, with comparison to the requirements of code for Loads concerning the vertical seismic acceleration. Studies of V/H ratio included data from 25 earthquakes, with a total number of 125 stations. For each station, 16 V/H relationships are obtained, 8 for time history and 8 for response spectra. Effects of magnitude, epicentre distance, and soil type are analysed. The second part of the thesis presents studies on the application of the V / H ratio on reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges. V / H ratio of Eurocode 8 is used to obtain the straining actions for each bridge. Results are analysed and compared to estimate the effect of the vertical component on the design, with comparison of the effect of Vertical Seismic Acceleration to the effect of vertical loads own weight, live loads |
