Abstract

Arthur Miller’s latest works indicate a state of intensity and maturity, for they exemplify the author’s wisdom achieved over years of theatrical writing. This study is an attempt at re-inspecting Miller’s philosophy of life and subtle characterization through a cultural reading. This thesis undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the themes of broken relationships, disturbed society, and clash of values as reflected in Arthur Miller’s 90’s plays. This will be done by examining Miller’s three major works: The Ride down Mount Morgan (1991), The Last Yankee (1993), and Broken Glass (1994). The study will deal with the protagonists and their struggle to make sense of themselves and of the world. If they look to the past, as they do in almost everything Miller has written, it is because they are searching for some structure of meaning and an explanation for a sense of failure, anxiety and betrayal. A cultural reading seems to reconcile seemingly different critical approaches to Miller’s later plays. Cultural Studies is a wide - ranging field that includes a variety of different theoretical and methodological perspectives
