Abstract

Breast cancer is considered the leading cause of cancer death among females in economically developing countries. Tumor markers are biochemical indicators for the presence of tumor. The epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) marker could be used to detect small deposits of malignant cells. This work was concerned with the identification and quantitative determination of EMA and then estimating its performance as surrogate marker for identifying breast cancer. Methods: The circulating level of EMA was determined by Western blot and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in sera from 102 women with Breast cancer and 90 women as controls (40 with benign breast condition and 50 healthy). Results: EMA at 130 kDa was identified. EMA showed area under receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.946 with 69.6% sensitivity, 94.0% specificity, 96.0% PPV, 60.3% NPV, and 77.6% efficiency. Conclusion: EMA may improve the identification of breast carcinoma with a high degree of accuracy in this group of Egyptian women
