Abstract Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a life-threatening condition representing one of the leading causes of peripartum maternal death throughout the world. A primary cause of PPH is uterine atony. Two uterotonics, oxytocin and carbetocin are in the Essential Medicines List by the World Health Organization, Aim and objectives: To compare between effectiveness and safety of carbetocin and oxytocin on intraoperative blood loss in cesarean deliveries at high risk for PPH. Subjects and methods: This study is randomized clinical trial, was carried out on 100 pregnant women at Obstetrics and Gynecology Emergency Department (Kasr Al-Ainy Hospital – Faculty of Medicine – Cairo University) in the period between May2021 to August 2021. Results: There was significant difference between both groups regarding additional use of other uterotonic drugs. Conclusion: Carbetocin appeared to be as effective as oxytocin for prevention of postpartum hemorrhage in patient undergoing elective cesarean section. |
