Abstract

Canine cardiac diseases are an important health problem worldwide, however, there are limited records documenting its existence and distribution in Egypt. The present study was designed to recordboth congenital and acquired cardiac diseases in a population of client-owned dogs using clinical, radiographic, electrocardiographic, echocardiographic and laboratory examinations. Serum biochemical analysis included measuring cardiac troponin I (cTnI), creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in a random population of dogs with myxomatousmitral valve diseases (MMVD) (n= 12) of four presented breeds (German shepherd dogs (GSD), Griffon dogs, Pekingese dogs and Cocker spaniels) and results were compared to control groups (n= 12) of each corresponding breed. Cases were categorized according to the type of the cardiac affections and their distribution. Demographic and laboratory data were statistically analysed and expressed as mean and standard deviation (SD). The study population consisted of 22 different breeds which mainly included Griffon (n= 20) and GSD(n= 16). The acquired and congenital affections represented 78.7% and 21.7 % of the of the examined population respectively.MMVD(48.6%) and dilated cardiomyopathy (16.7%) constituted most of the acquired affections. Patent ductus arteriosus (30%) and pulmonic stenosis (30%) mostly constituted the congenital affections.cTnI values showed significant difference between the control groups and MMVD group of the GSDand the Griffon dogs, while CK and LDH values were significant in all groups. In conclusion, cardiac diseases in the examined samplerevealed minor differences from previous worldwidereports.cTnI concentration has a limited use for MMVD dogs, while CK and LDH showed high sensitivity.
