Abstract Background Pain is one of the most common challenging that occurs in CCUs. In spite of its incidence, there are many patients who suffer with pain barriers. Nurses should reinforce and encourage the behaviors alleviating the pain. Aim: The present study aimed to assess pain management in the coronary care units from patients’ perspectives. Method: A descriptive exploratory research design was conducted on patients who are admitted to CCUs. A purposive sample of all patients diagnosed with cardiac diseases during the data collection, patients who admitted to CCUs during 48 hour. Data were collected through using Patient assessment questionnaires. Tools: A structured interview questionnaire sheet which composed of two tools; tool(1) concerned with socio-demographic characteristics and health relevant data of studied patients, tool (2) concerned with patient’ perception regarding pain management and its barriers questionnaire regarding were used to collect data. Results: It became clear that nurses’ major obstacle was time management. Insufficient psychological support services and a lack of non-pharmacological pain management alternatives were reported as barriers by 98.0% of patients. Interruptions in pain-related activities and a shortage of nurses are further barriers. Patients were reluctant to express pain and receive more injections because they afraid of rising medical costs. Conclusion: it can be concluded that nurses had time limitation and lack of psychosocial support services, alternatives to pharmacological therapy for pain management, and a lack of availability of pain management equipment are the major barriers was faced. Recommendations: In order to overcome some of these perceived barriers, it should be investigated and ongoing education is recommended. |
