Abstract

Accurate restoration of facial symmetry after complex maxillofacial trauma is extremely challenging. Computer aided design software allows mirror planning of the surgical procedure. Diverse applications of rapid prototyping have been emerging throughout the last decade. The aim of the work is to study the effectiveness and accuracy of 3D models generated by computer aided design software and rapid prototyping printer. Patients with posttraumatic maxillofacial fractures were the study group. Following imaging with CT scan , the imaging data are imported to computer aided design software and processed to produce 3D virtual skull model. The file is imported to 3D printer to generate the physical model. Actual operative plans are rehearsed on physical models with implant placement position. The 3D printed models allows reduction of operation time by precise preoperative planning , accurate reduction of fracture lines and restoration of facial symmetry
