Abstract

The effects of cypermethrin (CYM) and deltamethrin (DEM) insecticides on male fertility and spermatogenesis were evaluated in rats. The protective role of vitamin E was also examined. A total of 45 mature male rats were distributed into 9 groups, of 5 rats each. One group was control; and in the other groups each insecticide was orally given at 2 doses, alone and /or in combination with vitamin E for 65 days. Blood samples were withdrawn for determination of levels of testosterone, FSH and LH in the serum. Semen samples were collected from cuda epididymides for semen analysis. Sex organs weight, semen analysis, serum biochemical analysis, blood criteria and histopathology of testes, liver and kidneys were the parameters used in this study. The results showed that oral administration of rats with CYM and DEM concomitantly with vitamin E improved the relative weight of testes and increased sperm count, motility and viability. There were also significant increases in serum testosterone, FSH and LH levels and antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPx and CAT) activity in testes associated with amelioration of testicular degenerative changes. CYM and DEM produced hepatonephrotoxicity, and increased serum total cholesterol and triglycerides, but have no adverse effects on blood picture of rats. In conclusion, vitamin E exerts a protective effect against testicular toxicity induced by CYM and DEM in rats
