Abstract The importance of bridge aerodynamic investigations was immediately realized after the tacoma narrows bridge collapsed in 1940. This thesis used the CFD software open FOAM as a numerical tool for calculating the critical wind speed for flutter instability instead of the wind tunnel tests and a selberg formula. Also, it optimize the deck shape to reduce the aerodynamic forces effect. To achieve this goal, the tatara cable stayed Bridge deck and the stonecutters cable-stayed bridge deck are simulated by using the open FOAM model as a two cases study. For the two cases, more than 35 model cases were tests and the influence of the geometry modifications on the aerodynamic stability has been established through this thesis, which has beneficial to the final design of the bridge |
