Abstract Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is a useful management information system to organize activities, decisions, and information flows across many different functions and departments in a firm. ERP is the leading approach to integrate business management and information technology. The purpose of this study is to assess the varying performance benefits flowing from different ERP system implementation statuses in both Egyptian government and business sector, and investigate the impact of ERP implementation challenges on the ERP system deployment process. There are many differences between government and business organization such as organization{u2019} structure, organizational culture and behavior, decision-making process and governance, which can influence significantly the ERP implementation process. The comparison between government and business organization regarding 2ERP implementation3 will help in identifying the challenges resulting from the organizational differences. Realizing improvements in organization{u2019}s performance often requires adopting a long term view, as ERP{u2019}s significant organizational impacts are often realized after the implementation phase. This study develops a conceptual model and empirically examines the impact of external and internal challenges upon successful ERP implementation.
