Abstract

Objective: The purpose of the study is to review the literature, evaluation of the recent trends in the management of spontaneous spinal infection and evaluation of the different surgical management options and outcomes. Methods: this is a retrospective analysis of the clinical manifestation of 20 patients of spontaneous spinal infection evaluated neurologically by ASIA score, pain was evaluated by Denis score ,and radiological evaluated by MRI and x-ray, with a follow up for their neurological integrity, deficits and outcome. Results: In this study 20 patients were included :12 males (60%) and 8 females (40%), where the male: female ratio was 1.5:1 .The mean age of presentation in this study was 41.25 ± 18.19 years . Among the 20 patients evaluated according to the pathology (11 of them were due to tuberculosis infection (pott`s disease) (55%), 5 patients were due to Non specific infection (25%), 2 patients were due to Brucella infection (10%) ,1patient was due to streptococci infection(5%),and finally 1 patients was due to staph aureus infection (5%).) Among the 20 patients 7 of them were conservatively managed (35%),13 patients were managed surgically(65%). all the 20 patients were complained of pain 6 patients (30%) were P5 by Denis score,10 patients (50%) were P 4 and 4 patients were (20%) P3. Among the 20 patients ,7 patients had neurological deficit at the time of presentation (35%), 13 (65%) patient was free of any neurological deficit
