Abstract The aim of the work is to investigate the association of serum zinc levels with ADHD diagnosis, its symptom domains and severity. Then to assess the effects of zinc supplementation on ADHD symptoms in zinc deficient ADHD children. 75 children aged from 6-14 years with DSM IV diagnosis of ADHD were recruited from the child ADHD clinics located in Kasr Alainy hospitals. All children were assessed using colored progressive matrices IQ test, kiddie schedule for affective disorders and schizophrenia for school age children present and lifetime version (K-SADS-PL). The working memory Index WMI of wechsler intelligence scale for children [WISC-III] and conner{u2019}s parent rating scale CPRS-R-L. Serum zinc level was measured in all children using atomic absorption spectroscopy and zinc deficient ADHD children (relative to the laboratory reference range ( < 60 æg / dl) were assigned to zinc supplementation (30 mg / day) in two daily divided doses (15 mg b.i.d) as gluconate in an open-label follow up trial for 10 weeks. A second blood sample was withdrawn from them to measure serum zinc level after zinc supplementation. Effects of zinc supplementation were assessed using colored progressive matrices IQ test, The working memory index WMI of wechsler intelligence scale and conner{u2019}s parent rating scale |
