Abstract

Background: CCl4 stimulates free radical production that induces oxidative stress. The study aims to investigate the influence of feeding of some plants (Allium cepa peels powder Trifolium alexandrinum seeds powder) as compared to equivalent dose for quercetin to alleviate hepatic intoxication in experimental rats. Subject &Method: 35 adult male albino rats were divided into two main groups;the first group(7rats) fed on basal diet as a (negative control group). The second (28 rats) were injected with CCl4 2ml/Kg b.wt four times/ week to induce liver damage then divided into four subgroups, the first subgroup fed standard diet (positive control group). The second, third and fourth subgroup fed standard diet containing (1g/70kg bwt) quercetin, (16g for 100g.diet) red onion peels powder and containing (18g for 100g.diet) clover seeds powder as treated grouprespectively. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected for analysis and the liver tissue processed for histological examination, MDA level DNA fragmentation, and ELISA determination for Interleukin-18of rats. Result: The result revealed that there was elevation in mean activities of ALT, AST, MDA and also elevation in conc.of IL-18 in hepatic tissue. Also pathological examination of liver tissue showed abnormal alteration which confirmed with DNA fragmentation. The results showed a significantly decrease in activities of ALT and AST in serum also significant decline in MDA and IL-18 level in liver tissue in all treated group especially in clover seed treated group. Conclusion: Trifolium alexandrinum seeds powder can be used as effective therapy in liver
