Abstract Joining dissimilar sheet thicknesses of AA6082-T6 alloy by friction stir spot welding (FSSW) provides many advantages in engineering applications. However, the keyhole left behind after FSSW is considered deleterious for the morphology and properties of the joints. To overcome this problem, a novel keyhole refilling technique has been developed based on a friction stir deposition technique. Initially, the FSSW joints of AA6082-T6 sheets were produced at various tool rotation speeds and a constant dwell time. Then, the keyhole refilling process was achieved using a specially designed consumable rod from AA2011-T6 to friction stir depositing continuous layers inside the left keyhole at specifically selected deposition parameters of rotation speed and feed rate. |
