The present study aims to develop a proposed strategic that fulfills digital transformation, which converts Sohag University into a smart university and reinforces its competitive advantage by benefiting from the theoretical framework and the results of the previous studies. It also identifies the reality of digital transformation that converts Sohag University to a smart university through the field study and determines its effect on the university’s competitive advantage, the different obstacles to digital transformation at the university, and the requirements that help achieve digital transformation at the university, which enhances its competitive advantage locally, regionally, and globally.
The study adopted the descriptive approach as the most appropriate to the nature of the study by collecting data associated with the strategic planning of the digital transformation of a smart university, the competitive advantages of universities, It adopted several tools in the field study, including a questionnaire on the planning level, a questionnaire on the executive level, and an open interview. The questionnaire on the planning level was applied to (74) participants, including the university president, vice presidents, secretary general, assistant secretary general, deans, and vice deans. The questionnaire on the executive level was applied to (416) participants, including directors of the projects of information and communications technology, electronic services units at the faculties, project of measurement, assessment and scientific publishing at the university, as well as the employees and technicians of these projects. The open interview was applied to (70) participants, including the officials of the planning and executive levels. The results of the study were discussed.
The results showed the lack of an independent strategic plan with elaborate goals and features of digital transformation that converts Sohag University to a smart university, the inadequate fund for digital transformation activities that converts University to a smart university, the poor technological smart infrastructure required for fulfilling digital transformation that converts University to a smart university, the inadequate high-efficiency security requirements necessary to achieve information security of digital transformation at University, and the inadequate trained human resources equipped with the skills of digital transformation that converts Sohag University to a smart university. In light of these results, the researcher formulated a proposed strategy to achieve digital transformation at Sohag University in order to become a smart university and enhance its competitive advantage.
