Abstract Coronary artery disease is one of the most common and serious effects of aging. Since fatty deposits build up in blood vessel walls, it narrows the passageway for the movement of blood. And hence, the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the cardiac muscle is reduced. The resulting disease is called coronary atherosclerosis, which can lead to a heart attack and possibly death. Therefore, there is a crucial need to develop a fully automated approach for segmentation and quantitative vascular shape analysis of the coronary arteries, which constitutes an essential and fundamental component of a computer-aided system for the early diagnosis of coronary artery disease. In order to achieve this goal, a computed tomography angiography (CTA) scan is employed to capture high quality images for the heart and its coronary arteries |
