Abstract Malt Extract Agar (MEA) media proved to be more suitable for isolation of drinking water fungi than Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) media considering growth of more fungal taxa. 2. Fungi occurred widely in drinking water sources. The genera Aspergillus, Penicillium and Trichoderma were often detected frequently. 3. The highly dominant fungal species in drinking water samples were Aspergillus alutaceus, A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, A. sulfurous, A. terreus, Penicillium chrysogenum, P. globrum and Trichoderma viride. A. fumigatus and A. terreus which isolated frequently from most of the home tap water samples. 4. Untreated Nile water sample was the highest contaminated one with fungi compared to the other water samples, followed by home tap water sample from Al Sharqia then that from Banha. 5. Treated water sample collected from WTP before distribution in Dar Elsalam city was free from any fungal contamination indicating the efficiency of the treatment process |
