Abstract

Since one of the primary objectives of urban design and the current movement toward sustainable urbanism is to reduce auto dependence and increase pedestrian activity, pedestrian malls deserve renewed attention. Shopping Streets have a major impact on city liveability and provide one of the most vital spaces in the city. With proper design and implementation, pedestrian zones can enhance the quality of life, livability, and sustainability of cities. A pedestrian-oriented shopping street (POSS) - the so-called 2pedestrian mall3-consists of one or more streets linked to each other. The heart of a POSS is a an outdoor designed landscaped pedestrian area along both sides, with a diversity of stores and services. However, a recent study reported that the success rate of pedestrian malls is approximately 11%; POSS have faced a difficulty after the evolution of technology, Therefore, POSSs are critical and deserve more attention. On the other hand, Urban technologies{u2014}chiefly as systems{u2014}provide what may be called the ”sinews” of the modern city: its road, bridge, and transit networks{u2026}etc., Not only have these technological systems permitted urban growth and diversification, but they also have encouraged profound changes in the urban landscape design. As technology is essential to the shopping experience nowadays, it should be utilized to maximize the customer experience and it should not only meet, but exceed customer expectations. In addition, technology can create an attractive environment through making the shopping experience engaged and memorable. Therefore, This Thesis attempts to contribute to the on-going debate concerning technological effect on one of the liveable designed environment, POSS, through understanding how technology implementation contributes to the success of POSS
