Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to review the literature regarding the impingement syndrome of the shoulder and to evaluate the results of open acromioplasty versus arthroscopic acromioplasty and compare the results with the previously published results. If non-operative treatment fails to reduce symptoms, operative intervention may be indicated. Anterior acromioplasy with resection of the coracoacromial ligament can be performed with the use either the traditional open technique described by Neer or the arthroscopic method described by Ellman (Levine and William 1997).This a prospective study done between April 2015 and October 2016, 60 patients (40 males and 20 females) diagnosed as impingement syndrome of the shoulder and selected for this study from the patients who attended the out patient clinic in Kasr El Ainy University Hospital and El Sahel Teaching Hospital., 30 patients were treated by open acromioplasty and the other 30 patients were treated by arthroscopic acromioplasty. All patients were evaluated three and six months post-operatively. We recommend to do what you can do well either open or arthroscopic as it is always the same results six months post-operative with little advantages to arthroscopic acromioplasty
